Notes and Editorial Reviews

The 1955 Studio Cast of Carousel was the first comprehensive recording of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s great score. Metropolitan Opera stars Patrice Munsel and Robert Merrill bring their sumptuous voices to the roles of Julie Jordan and Billy Bigelow plus a cast that includes the future “Mrs. Brady,” Florence Henderson, Tony-winner George S. Irving, Gloria Lane and Herbert Banke. Legendary Broadway maestro Lehman Engel conducts this recording, of which Richard Rodgers wrote, “It is my hope that you will enjoy the splendid artists who have made this album as much as I enjoy them.” The 1955 Studio Cast of Carousel was the first comprehensive recording of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s great score.  Beautiful Rendition of Carousel September 5, 2018 By Carol C. (Monroe, NY) See All My Reviews "We had read about this recording but were unable to find it anywhere. Then we learned about ArkivMusic through an internet search. Reluctant to try an unknown entity at first, we decided to go ahead based on online reviews. We have been thrilled with the quality of this recording as well as the speed and efficiency with which we received it. To us, my wife and myself, it is simply the best recording of Carousel we have ever heard. Robert Merrill, Patrice Munsel and Florence Henderson are all extraordinary. The recording contains a couple of songs that were performed in the recent Broadway revival (2018) but were not in the movie version: "The Highest Judge of All" and "Blow High, Blow Low" and they are particularly exciting. In additiion, "The Carousel Waltz" is performed beautifully and Merrill's rendition of "Soliloquy" is, to our taste, the best we have ever heard. This is a studio recording released in 1955 and virtually impossible get anywhere else; it contains the original Broadway cast. From what we have read, the decisiion was made to do a studio recording to take advantage of advances in recording technology in the ten years since Carousel was originally performed." Report Abuse
