Notes and Editorial Reviews

Angela Brownridge shows herself as well attuned to the whimsy of Embryons desséchés as to the antique poise of the famous Gymnopédies.

This recording was made by Music for Pleasure, and in issuing it on their Eminence label EMI hope to emulate the success of Peter Lawson's Satie/Classics for Pleasure recital (CFP40328, 6/80). Angela Brownridge's programme is carefully chosen so as to avoid dupliciating that record (with the exception of the Gymnopédies and one of the Gnossiennes) and in so doing there is a certain emphasis on Satie's café-music-hall vein. Generally speaking these pieces are ephemeral but not without charm-the Valse-ballet and the Fantaisie-valse are examples of his
Read more earliest, watered down-Chopin style, and potboilers such as Poudre d'or and fete veux seem to cry out for the addition of Tom Lehrer lyrics; Le Piccadilly, implausibly described on the sleeve-note as a forerunner of Scott Joplin, is a catchy little cakewalk. All these are well served by the pianist's straightforward approach to the idiom. However, Jack-in-the-box (which, like Le Piccadilly, is misdated on the sleeve) does seem to invite more robust projection, if not the insouciant pointing which the better known orchestral version (by Milhaud) gives it.

In the rest of her programme Angela Brownridge shows herself as well attuned to the whimsy of Embryons desséchés and the Trois raises duprécieux dégozzé as to the antique poise of the famous Gymnopédies (best of all in No. 3) and Gnossiennes (by some distance my favourite pieces on the record). The clear recorded sound is credited, as on Peter Lawson's record, to one Mr Bear-no doubt the composer would have approved.
