Notes and Editorial Reviews

From the GRAMOPHONE review of the original CD release:
Now along comes Previn's mid-seventies analogue version to sweep the board. This time the EMI engineers have a marked success on their hands. ...The performance is a triumph, with a wonderful swagger, seductive rhythmic pointing and a life-enhancing sense of joy conveyed in all life's earthly pleasures...The soloists, too are splendid, Thomas Allen especially fine, but Sheila Armstrong and Gerald English also characterizing strongly. The vigorous singing of the main chorus is superbly projected and the range of mood is wide, conveying wit and quality as well as an exuberant, bite." Ivan March, GRAMOPHONE

The medieval poems set to music by Carl Orff in
Read more 'Carmina Burana' are of a variety which were standard repertoire for the wandering minstrels of the 13th century. In Orff's settings these songs of spring retain their sensuous and celebratory tone, with lyrics about passion and long nights in the tavern. The songs are short but lively, with a rhythmic energy stemming from their origins. Though the work is carried predominantly by the London Symphony Orchestra and chorus, the three featured soloists set the tone, representing the carnal motivations of the season. André Previn was already well established as an arranger and composer in Hollywood--his first film score was commissioned when he was just 18, and he received an Oscar for GIGI before he turned 30--but he didn't begin a career as a "serious" conductor until 1963. This recording, made in 1974, helped confirm his reputation in this arena as well.
