The Sixteen with Organ March 31, 2012
By Christian B. (Price, UT) See All My Reviews
"I was looking for an album of the great British hymns of the last 150 years sung with organ, and I think I found a great one here. The big organ sound in all these tunes makes this the real British cathedral experience. I suppose these hymns would more properly be called anthems, and they are sung that way by the Sixteen. Although the ensemble is relatively small, they are technically superb and rise to the challenge of matching the booming organ sound. So many great tunes here - I especially love their "Jerusalem" and the ethereal and majestic "Blessed City" by Bairston. You get the sense that this is music appreciated by the performers not just for its musical qualities but for its devotional ones as well. I only wish that lyrics had been included - I am sure they are familiar to most British listeners but for many on this side of the pond this is new. This is a great CD that I play over and over."
