Notes and Editorial Reviews

Many music lovers are familiar with his Vienna operettas, yet Franz von Suppè (1819–1895) also left behind sacred works definitely worth hearing, but which today are overshadowed by his works for the stage. In his unmistakable compositional style the most diverse influences are united, ranging from the tradition of church music, Italian and German opera, as well as the idioms of folk music drawn from Viennese and Dalmatian cultural regions. The young men’s ensemble, the Lords of the Chords, and the organist Jens Wollenschläger present Suppès Missa Dalmatica, dedicated to the composer’s native land of Dalmatia. This work for three men’s voices and organ, with its charming, unusual character, occupies a special place in the history of church Read more music in the 19th century. Read less
