Notes and Editorial Reviews

Schiff’s playing is notable for its rhythmic flexibility and for the clarity it brings to Bach’s contrapuntal textures. His manner is sensitive, genial, and graceful – and while he occasionally has a tendency to be pretty where Glenn Gould would be piquant, he can also be remarkably insightful. He brings spontaneity and animation to the faster variations, compelling directness to the slower ones, and offers a performance of exceptional beauty and spirituality overall. The recording, made in London’s Kingsway Hall in December of 1982, is excellent, and comes with excellent notes by George Malcolm. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.
