Notes and Editorial Reviews

Performances that are direct and spirited, and very much in tune with how this music was regarded in its time — part of a straightforward and essentially joyous act of worship.

This coupling has become very popular recently, and the version of it here under Frans Brüggen is as appealing as any I can recall. The performances are direct and spirited, mostly at lively tempos, and, in feeling, very much in tune, it seems to me, with how this music was regarded in its time - part of a straightforward act of worship, essentially a joyous one. The playing and singing are attractively shapely, as the elegant solos for soprano and tenor, and for the orchestral oboe, in the Kyrie of K317, show at the outset. In the Gloria,
Read more and elsewhere, some of the accents are perhaps overdone, but there is a good, flowing rhythm and a sense of jubilance about it, and much the same goes for the Credo; both are taken decidedly on the quick side, with the result that the contrast in the latter with a distinctly slow "Et incarnatus" is perhaps too marked. The Sanctus is duly imposing, the Benedictus very light and delicate, almost a little sugary; then in the Agnus Dei there is particularly warm and graceful singing from Marinella Pennicchi, accompanied with much refinement.

The Vesperae solennes de confessore is predominantly a choral work and the Netherlands Chamber Choir produce plenty of strong, forthright singing for Brüggen, especially in the affirmative music of the two outer movements, done in very spirited fashion. There is shapely phrasing in the "Confitebor", and variety of tone and texture in the "Laudate pueri", a long and learned fugue that needs a little management if it is not to become dull - and it certainly doesn't here. In the "Laudate Dominum" Pennicchi sings very gracefully and the effect is duly touching. A gentle and finely controlled account of the Ave verum corpus rounds off a very pleasing disc.
