Notes and Editorial Reviews

SCHUMANN Violin Concerto in d. Violin Sonata No. 1. 3 Romances Kolja Blacher (vn); Vassily Lobanov (pn, cond); Mahler CO PHIL 06011 (61:13)

Kolja Blacher has many credits to his name, though I will wager that anyone who has heard or seen a summer concert of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra has seen Blacher in the concertmaster role, something he does every year in addition to his solo playing and conducting assignments. This program of Schumann ranges from the last of his orchestral works (1853), which had to Read more wait 84 years for its premiere, to the 1851 First Violin Sonata, which was completed breathlessly in the space of four days, to the greatest and most beautiful of his solo works, the op. 94 pieces for oboe, but which were transcribed then and even today for a multitude of instruments.

Blacher is a magnificent player with a warm and fiery burnished coloring to his sound, completely in control of this idiom and with an affectionately engrossing approach to Schumann. I can’t imagine that anyone would be disappointed with these performances, and the idea of taking an orchestral work, a sonata, and some character pieces and putting them on one disc works very well. Beautiful playing all around on this exceptional recording.
