At one of her rare appearances with orchestra, Martha Argerich, the grande dame of the piano, joined forces with world-famous cellist Mischa Maisky and the fabulous Lucerne Symphony Orchestra for the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin – “Romantic Offering”, a double concerto for piano, cello and orchestra dedicated to its very first soloists. The programme was rounded off by late-Romantic masterpieces by César Franck, Antonín Dvo?ák and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony under the baton of renowned maestro Neeme Järvi.

“I’ve attempted to depict and

Martha Argerich and Mischa Maisky - and more! May 17, 2012 By Luke Bryant (Oakleigh South, Victoria) See All My Reviews "I live in a suburb of Metropolitan Melbourne in the State of Victoria, Australia. My home State, indeed the Nation is sport crazy! Across the weeks, football, cricket, soccer, car racing or some other form of human body damaging occupation is available for participation - or you can sit back and watch it on TV as an accepted “Culture”.
NO! Not me! I take a DVD from the collection, perhaps this Martha Argerich and Mischa Maisky magnificent performance of the Cesar Frank Sonata for Cello and Piano and enjoy watching and hearing two great artists bring real culture to a wide screen with DTS 5.1 surround sound into our living room.
This very impressive recording that also includes Dvorak’s Scherzo Capriccioso, a World Premiere of Shchedrin’s “Romantic Offering” and a bonus offering “Behind the Scenes of a World Premiere”. It concludes with a most satisfying live performance by the eminent Neeme Jarvi, conducting the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, recorded in 2011, of the Shostakovich Symphony No.9.
In this nearly two hours of enriching entertainment, music does move your soul by touching your heart; it is to be enjoyed a lot more than just once.
