This is a wonderful disc to have restored to the catalog, especially at a budget price. A pupil of both Maria Ivogün and Erna Berger, Rita Streich (1920–87) followed her teachers in the succession of great German coloratura sopranos that included Lotte Read more Schöne and Erna Sack. Alas, she was the last of that line, her contemporaries and rivals Wilma Lipp and Erika Köth were markedly her inferiors, and no one else has really succeeded to her mantle. Her voice was absolutely faultless: a ravishingly beautiful and pure tone, produced with perfect breath support and absolute evenness from bottom to top, with dead-on intonation and completely secure high notes free from any shrillness. This was allied to an interpretive art that was vivacious and yet always in perfectly good taste, able to pull out the stops for effect without falling prey to vulgarity. While she was perhaps best known for the roles of Adele in Die Fledermaus , Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro , Blondchen in Die Entführung aus dem Serail , and the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte , I also treasure her two appearances as the Woodbird in the live 1953 performances of Siegfried at Bayreuth—the best renditions of the part ever preserved on disc—and her Amor in a 1952 radio broadcast of Gluck’s Orfeo et Eurydice with Berger and Margaret Klose (a superlative vocal trio unfortunately hobbled by the impossibly turgid conducting of Artur Rother). Her career peaked during the 1950s; why it did not have equal success during the 1960s, when she would have benefited from stereo recording, has always puzzled me, since her voice remained intact. Her art recently gained some popular exposure when comic Rowan Atkinson hilariously lip-synched to her recording of “O mio babino caro” in his 2007 movie Mr. Bean’s Holiday.

The 17 arias and songs contained on this disc were recorded in 1955 and 1958. In the earlier collection the orchestra is simply called the “Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin” as opposed to the “RIAS Symphony Orchestra Berlin,” though both albums are led by the same conductor. I have not been able to ascertain if the two ensembles are indeed different, or if the name was altered for contractual or other reasons for the first album. The disc features three selections by Strauss, two by Arditi, and one by each of the other composers listed in the headnote. An accomplished linguist, Streich sings all of the pieces in their original languages—German, Italian, French, English, Czech, and Russian (Streich spent part of her childhood in Russia and spoke Russian fluently). Many of the items presented here were once recital staples but are now rarities, making their renewed availability all the more welcome. The monaural sound throughout has been given an excellent remastering, to a degree that the absence of stereo quickly fades from one’s awareness. The only drawback is the lack of texts for the selections. This is a terrific treat; don’t wait to get it until it goes out of print in the next few nanoseconds, as happens to all too many CDs.
