Notes and Editorial Reviews

These performances have been kicking around on so many labels that it’s getting confusing: first Philips, then PentaTone, and now Newton Classics. However, this two-disc set does put all of Haitink’s Ravel orchestral works (excluding concertos) with the Concertgebouw together in a single package. As I mentioned in discussing the PentaTone reissue, the complete Mother Goose ballet and Daphnis and Chloé Suite No. 2 sound a bit faded however beautifully played, but everything else really is excellent, including Boléro, La Valse, a fabulous Rapsodie espagnole, and a gorgeous Le tombeau de Couperin. The best of these performances belong in every serious Ravel collection.
