A Worthy AlternativeSeptember 13, 2014By D. Bell (San Diego, CA)See All My Reviews"Although Eiji Oue and the Minnesota Orchestra's recording of Respighi's orchestration of Rachmaninov's Etudes-Tableaux claims top prize among the critics, not to be overlooked is Collins' recording with Gennady Rozhdestvensky's with the London Philharmonic. I've owned both recordings, and can't find much to differentiate the two, especially in the magnificent 'Seagulls' movement (hat tip to Resphighi), which is as ravishingly done under the direction of Rozhdestvensky as that of Oue. Plus, the Collins title also includes the wonderfully zany Schoenberg orchestration of Brahms' Piano Quartet op 25 (which Schoenberg puckishly referred to as 'Brahms' Fifth Symphony')."Report Abuse
