Notes and Editorial Reviews

The most ambitious work included in the second Philips CD reissue of sacred works by Vivaldi is a setting of the Dixit Dominus (RV594). Vivaldi composed two settings of the psalm, the present one, the more elaborate, calling for soloists, double choir and double orchestra. The work is prefaced here by a solo motet for soprano with orchestra, the Introduzione al Dixit (RV636). It's a delightful piece which almost certainly was intended to take its place before the psalm setting. The soloist is Margaret Marshall who gives a radiant account of its three short movements. The text is a celebration both of Nature and of God the Creator and as such recalls the early Enlightenment images of the German poets. The Dixit itself is a fine piece, full Read more of contrasting ideas and with some very affecting moments as, for example, that which occurs at the beginning of the ''Judicabit''.

Vivaldi set the Magnificat only once but made several re-arrangements of it eventually arriving at the version performed here (RV611) in 1739. The most striking difference between the present version and the earlier ones is the substitution of three solo soprano numbers for gifted singers at the Ospedale della Pieta in Venice and a rearrangement of two other movements to accommodate the vocal skills of two contralto singers whom Vivaldi evidently encountered at the Pieta at the time. The remaining work here is a setting for two sopranos, contralto, choir and orchestra of the psalm, Beatus vir (RV598). This is not the large, fairly well-known setting for soloists, double choir and orchestra but a single movement constructed somewhat along the lines of an elaborate concerto movement.

Generally speaking the performances are lively and sympathetic with fine contributions from the soloists, above all Margaret Marshall. Vivaldi's sacred music is sometimes too lightly dismissed: there are many affecting devices on display here and few lovers of late-baroque church music will be disappointed by the colourful setting of the Dixit Dominus. Recorded sound is excellent and documentation well up to previous high standards. Full texts in Latin, English, French and German are included. It is greatly to be hoped that Philips will do the decent thing and let us have the remainder of this successful project on CD before long.
