Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Karajan's 1977 Eroica is undoubtedly controversial for its palpably fast tempo for the first movement. Pacing is a deceptive matter in a Beethoven performance, for a sense of compulsive onward momentum can be conveyed at a relatively modest speed; but here the performance is made to sound fast and not everyone will find it comfortable. Moreover, the exposition repeat is omitted which would in theory detract from the weight of the structure; but the body of the recording combines with the orchestral playing itself to give the performance genuine power and with a lyrically intense slow movement, a crisp, resilient Scherzo (marvellous horns) and an exhilarating finale, the reading makes a convincing whole. "Fierce, fast and Read more beautiful" was RO's opinion. About Leonore No. 3 there can be no question. It is superbly dramatic—the trumpet call given a nicely atmospheric distancing—with the coda breathtaking in its cumulative display of bravura from the strings. The remastering is most successful—one barely notices that the overture comes from a decade earlier and the sound balance in the symphony is more convincing, richer, more believable than in the later full-price DG digital version ((F) 415 506-2G1-1, 6/86), although there the first movement gains marginally from being somewhat less tense."
