Notes and Editorial Reviews

Released for the first time ever in the West, this recording is part of the series of Rozhdestvensky conducting all of Tchaikovsky's symphonies. A brilliant recording featuring the acclaimed conductor. The disc also includes Tchaikovsky's Overture in C Minor, performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Sergei Skripka.

(of his previous Tchaikovsky recordings) "As I have often felt with Rozhdestvensky's recordings, their warm, easy spontaneity... suggests sessions where the aim was to communicate immediately and warmly in a near equivalent to live performance." (Gramophone)

Reflections of Lord Byron by Tchaikovsky April 17, 2016 By owen  r. (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "This programmatic symphony based on Byron's poetic character Manfred reflects an individual tortured by guilt for an unmentioned offence. This could well be a reflection of Lord Byron himself (accused of an incestous relationship). Likewise, Tchaikovsky's own turmoil over his homosexuality may also be reflected in this composition. This is not one of my favorite Tchaikovsky symphonies but it is, as you might expect, played with great verve and clarity by Rozhdestvensky and the orchestra. The accompanying overture is nicely done. All things considerd a great buy." Report Abuse
