Notes and Editorial Reviews

"These versions of the Brahms symphonies rank with the very finest available. They are stunning, and they established Levine as a true successor to his mentor, George Szell. His Brahms especially has all of Szell’s precision and care for balance and proportion, with none of his occasional stiffness...after experiencing these performances anew we recall what all of the excitement was about. The “buzz” was entirely justified."

In the Steps of George Szell??? October 10, 2014 By Tony Engleton See All My Reviews "10-10-2014 James Levine trained under the great Austro-American Maestro, George Szell from 1964 to 65, at age 21,22, and was appointed assistant in Cleveland until 1970, when Szell died. the same year, 1970, he filled in last minute for Istvan Kertesz at opening night at Ravinia and in 73, was named Music Director of the Festival till 1993. We first heard him as I proposed to my wife at the opening night Mahler 8th, in 1973, we've been together now for about 40 years, WOW-----POOR GIRL!!!! so, to say the least, we grew up with this multi-talented artist and grown together as man and wife "under his watch." AND, as I recall, that romantic June evening back in 1973, also featured our first hearing of two rising unknowns, Kathleen Battle and the sublime Barbara Hendricks, making their CSO/Ravinia debuts in Mahler. WOW!!! Talk about a memory! but, there is lots more to this man than just nostalgia. In only 1 year, under Szell, just imagine the value f such tutelage in the principal of the great core repertoire, mainly of Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Brahms and, for a treat, Mahler, Strauss, Bruckner and so much more. A "golden child" from Cincinnati? A "wunderkindern," with a silver spoon? Call it what you will, he has led a charmed life and now has been facing some back-pain POSIBLY career ending troubles. On and off in activities in Boston, Levine has become the 1st American born MD of that great UA orchestra, in it's very long history. This is a no-frills economical box of the 4 Brahms Symphonies, the First Piano Concerto, with Emanuel Ax, the glistening German Requiem, featuring Battle and Hakon Hagegard, plus an assortment of Lieder with the CSO providing the orchestral backup.
