Notes and Editorial Reviews

Everyone has sentimental favorites, and this set is one of mine. Yes, the ensemble has a few rough spots now and againónothing seriousóbut the playing has such warmth and emotional generosity, that bigness of spirit thatís so often forgotten in todayís Beethoven performances. The Budapest Quartet clearly frames its view of the composer in terms of the great, late quartets. So Op. 18, cultured and intelligent thought it is, could do perhaps with a touch more energy in spots, a leaner basic sonority. But once we hit the great middle quartets itís smooth sailing right through to the end.

I am listening to the first Razumovsky Quartet as I write this: to the great purity of the cello cantilena, to the big dynamic range in the
Read more first crescendo, to the wonderfully phrased transition to the second subject, to the perfectly judged, swiftly flowing basic tempo and effortless ensemble rubato; really itís just lovely. Sure, sitting here with my zippy new Urtext score, I see a slur placed elsewhere now and again, an accent shifted, some dynamics adjusted, but who cares? None of it falls outside the normal parameters of a typical performance anyway, and while the sonics have dated and a measure of hiss remains, better that than attenuated high frequencies. Just beautiful.

OK but not as good sound as Heifitz recording August 12, 2012 By Donald S. (Edwards, CO) See All My Reviews "The sound is pretty typical for an old recording even as it was remastered to DDD. Try the Heifitz recordings of the same series from the manufacturer." Report Abuse
fond memories August 7, 2012 By John M. (mansfield, PA) See All My Reviews "My flute teacher, many years ago, taught me the mechanics of flute playing, and then taught me musicianship. I had to listen to recordings of the best musicians in the world, and much of what I listened to were recordings by the Budapest quartet. I was entranced. They really did play with great musicianship, and I thought their technique was impeccable. Until I bought these discs, I listened to the Guarneri; their playing is more polished than the Budapest, but both groups are among the elite." Report Abuse
