This is a well-crafted recital disc by a very good singer and with interesting material not often performed. It was recorded in 2004 and previously released in Europe on the Philips label, but not reviewed in these pages. Now, it is reissued on the Czech Supraphon label, which is only appropriate as the artist and much of the music are of Czech origin.

Czech light soprano Martina Janková has been performing as a member of the Zurich Opera company for nearly 15 years and appears frequently at venues throughout Germany and Austria. Particularly noted for her fine work in Mozart and Handel, she has been recorded on previous CDs and DVDs, yet has performed seldom in North America and is little-known here. I would think that is to our disadvantage. On this disc, Janková has assembled a program describing aspects of a person’s voyage through life, first through the not so naive eyes of a child with his nanny, in the seven songs of Modest Mussorgsky’s seldom-heard song cycle The Nursery . Into adolescence we then travel with Richard Strauss’s four Mädchenblumen Lieder and, a bit more grown, we move on to the Love Songs of Antonin Dvo?ák. Three quieter, introspective pieces by the Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck represent the “afternoon” of life, and finally Dvo?ák reappears with his cycle of Biblical Songs to describe the deeper, more spiritual values acquired as one ages.

The concept is fine, but the real gems here are the Mussorgsky and Dvo?ák songs, delivered in an attractive, light, silvery soprano voice in idiomatic Czech. Janková seems just as comfortable and just as fine in the more often-heard German works as well. She has a secure top range and solid intonation, and provides plenty of vocal color, singing like a child where appropriate in the Mussorgsky and sounding ardent and passionate with love in the first Dvo?ák cycle. Her partner on piano, the experienced and gifted Gérard Wyss, adds his own artistry to the mix in a seamless fashion.

Czech and English texts are provided for the Russian songs of Mussorgsky and the two Dvo?ák cycles, Czech and German texts only for the Strauss and Schoeck works. An essay and a short note by the singer are provided in four languages in this first-class presentation. If you are at all interested in the Mussorgsky and Dvo?ák songs, you will seldom hear them sung better.
