Charles Tomlinson Griffes was one of the most expressive and underrated American composers to emerge during the early 20th Century. While his early works showed the influence of German Romanticism, his later and most striking works, such as the Piano Sonata and the Poem for Flute and Orchestra, display a fascination with French Impressionism and Scriabin, as well as the music of east Asia.
