Joseph Smith shows consummate understanding and sensitivity as an interpreter of Charles T. Griffes, whose work has been described as "a peak of neo-Romantic expression in American piano music."

Charles Tomlinson Griffes was one of the most expressive and underrated American composers to emerge during the early 20th Century. While his early works showed the influence of German Romanticism, his later and most striking works, such as the Piano Sonata and the Poem for Flute and Orchestra, display a fascination with French Impressionism and Scriabin, as well as the music of east Asia.
