This is a welcome reissue, although more important works by Berio remain unavailable, or unrecorded. In part a memorial to the late lamented Cathy Berberian, the record also illustrates how far Berio travelled during the 1950s (between his mid-twenties and mid-thirties), from the Schoenbergian fractiousness of the Due pezzi, through the fresh lyricism and vivid miniature dramas of Chamber music to the spacious yet never ponderous gestural interplay of Differences—the whole point of which is to show that the 'differences' need not be absolute.

In the decade after Differences come the more daring economies of the solo Sequenzas, designed to spotlight the vulnerabilities as well as the virtuosity of particular performers. The

The biggest work here is Differences for five instruments and tape; but the two virtuoso solos - Sequenza III for voice and Sequenza VII for oboe - are if anything even more striking in their extensions of technique and espressive range.
