Notes and Editorial Reviews

Edward Elgar was the first composer to make extensive recordings of his own compositions. HMV (His Master's Voice) recorded much of his music acoustically from 1914 onwards and then began a series of electrical recordings in 1926 that continued until 1933, including his "Enigma Variations," "Falstaff," the first and second symphonies, his cello and violin concertos, all of the "Pomp and Circumstance" marches, and other orchestral works. Part of a 1927 rehearsal of the second symphony with the London Symphony Orchestra was also recorded and later issued.

REVIEW:

With Colin Davis, Mark Elder, Andrew Davis, and others promoting it, Elgar’s music is in good hands. Yet
Read more perhaps nobody has known so well as the composer himself how it should go — how passionately, how freely — as this collection of the complete electrical recordings he made between 1926 and 1933 magnificently shows.

Definitive March 5, 2019 By R. Rabicoff (Gaithersburg , MD) See All My Reviews "I already owned Elgar’s major works in fine performances by Previn, Boult, DuPre and others, but I couldn’t resist a chance to hear Sir Edward’s rendition, even with the likelihood of inferior sonics. The risk paid off. These are stately and lively performances by turns; the symphonies and concertos stand out, with special kudos to young Menuhin. Subpar sound does mar the Enigma Variations and the Gerontius excerpts, but otherwise the 1930s recordings are acceptable. It is fun to hear the obscure youthful works. Elgar’s recorded voice is virtually inaudible, so don’t let that influence you. Overall, this a worthwhile historical set and a must for Elgarians." Report Abuse
Out of the Past December 28, 2017 By Reginald Jones (Hamilton, VA) See All My Reviews "This collection is worth buying for anyone who appreciates Elgar's music. Although not a professional conductor, Sir Edward knew what he wanted and got it in spades. I was swept away by power and clarity of his conducting, The sound is as good as could be gotten out of the original source material when the remastering occurred in the early 1990s." Report Abuse
