Notes and Editorial Reviews

An essential collection of lyrical and dramatic chamber music by Bruch, given sensitive performances by the Plane-Dukes-Rahman Trio and featuring world-premiere recordings This disc offers a fascinating insight into the music of Bruch, whose rarely-heard chamber works are performed by the Plane-Dukes-Rahman Trio in a collection that includes world-premiere recordings. Bruch's sensitivity to solo stringed instruments is manifest in his moving Kol Nidrei, never recorded before and heard here in the version for viola and piano. Based around a traditional Jewish melody and written when the composer was living in Liverpool, this is a haunting work beautifully conveyed by Philip Dukes and Sophia Rahman. Also previously unrecorded, the Romance Read more boasts a rhapsodic main theme to rival anything in Bruch's output, and ranges from impassioned eloquence to the serenity of the ending. The 6 Piano Pieces are charming miniatures exploring a rarely-heard side of Bruch's style: songful and childlike, they recall Schumann and Mendelssohn and are heard here in their world-premiere recording. The disc concludes with the dramatic 8 Pieces for clarinet, viola and piano, the dark intensity and soulful lyricism of which encompass the stylistic variety displayed on this disc.
