TELEMANN Cantatas: Deine Toten warden leben. Wer sehnet sich nach Kerker. Wenn Israel am Nilusstrande. Durchsuch dich, o stolzer Geist. Trifft menschlich und voll Fehler sein. Es ist ein schlechter Ruhm. Locke nur, Erde Mona Julsrud (sop); Bergen Baroque (period instruments) TOCCATA 0074 (71:23 Text and Translation)

This is the third volume by the Bergen Baroque ensemble of the complete Harmonischer Read more Gottesdienst canatas that Georg Philipp Telemann published in 1726. This consists of seven works for high voice, recorder, and continuo for various Sundays after Trinity, all of which are part of this complete cycle of 72 works that the composer wrote for general use. For the most part, each consists of a pair of da capo arias between which can be found a short recitative, although three of them are more like Baroque chamber sonatas with a pair of recitative-aria sequences. Telemann’s intent, as always, was to provide music that could be adaptable to a variety of situations, from small court chapels to provincial churches with limited resources, writing works he thought would certainly be within the capabilities of the normal musicians to be found in these venues. These seven cantatas more than fulfill this requirement, and in some cases are downright virtuoso, requiring more than a modicum of ability to perform accurately. Right from the very first aria, “Deine Toten wird Leben” from the cantata for the fifth Sunday after Easter, the ear is startled by a fast and sinuous line of the recorder, expertly performed by Frode Thorsen, to which the flexible soprano of Mona Julsrud joins in so that the highly ornamented lines weave in and out from each other in a fashion requiring more than amateur ability. Contrasting with this are arias such as “Monarch der ganzen Kreatur” from the seventh Sunday after Trinity, where the floating dance-like melody is far simpler but requires absolute synchronization to maintain the flow. Telemann is not above the occasional pointed word-painting, such as the opening aria, “Locke nur, Erde,” from the cantata for the 23rd Sunday after Trinity with its hooting opening cry of “Tempt” ringing forth to over-emphasize the text of worldly charms tempting the unwary. The range and depth of these and other cantatas in this set are far more varied and often equally as difficult to perform as the better-known ones by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Like the other disc I reviewed (Volume 2: cantatas for middle voice), this disc is equally inspired. The ensemble is overall excellent, with Julsrud’s flexible soprano handling both the sensitive, slower arias and virtuoso display with taste and accuracy. She blends so well with Thorsen’s recorder that when both perform together it is almost as if two vocalists are evident. The tempos are, as on that other disc, lively and sensitive to the Affekt of the text. The continuo likewise is an omnipresent partner, never overbearing but well integrated into the overall texture. Again, Bergen Baroque has created a performance that brings Telemann’s music alive. It is equally as expert a recording as the first two discs, and I cannot wait to hear the next ones. This is one that will definitely be on my Want List.
