Notes and Editorial Reviews
Mackerras’s Delius from Wales is arguably the most fascinating of our age. Rich in variety, it is always distinctively sung and shaped, memorably fresh, freely animated, and at times unexpectedly vital, with climactic moments powerfully and often brassily realized. The lean strings contribute to these impressions, as does Decca’s relatively dry recording (‘forward facing’ horns in the best traditions of the house). So, a closer than usual look into the Delian mysteries, but a proper investigation, not an inspection.
