HAYDN Arias Jane Archibald (sop); Thomas Rösner, cond; Bienne SO ATMA ACD2 2661 (57:40 Text and Translation)

L’anima del filosofo, ossia Orfeo ed Euridice: Overture; “Al tuo seno fortunato”; “Filommena Abbandonata.” Il mondo della luna: “Ragian nell’alma siede”; “Se la mia stella.” L’isola disabitata: Read more Overture; “Che fu mai … Fra un dolce deliro.” L‘Incontro Improviso: Overture. Orlando Paladino: “Palpita ad ogni istante”; “Non partir, mia bella face”; “Implacabili numi!”; “Dell’estreme sue voci dolenti”

The Canadian soprano Jane Archibald has been singing leading coloratura roles (Queen of the Night, Konstanza, Olympia, Zerbinetta, Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier ) in the major opera houses across Europe (La Scala, Vienna Staatsoper, Deutsches Oper Berlin, Royal Opera Covent Garden) and recently made her Met debut as Ophélie in Thomas’s Hamlet . She displays a bright, forward soprano in these Haydn arias, all of which are coloratura showpieces. The booklet gives brief synopses of each opera, but not enough to establish the character of each role; Archibald blazes through the first five arias and one accompanied recitative without much feeling, as if she didn’t know the roles, either. Then, in Orlando Paladino , her singing is immediately more subtle and dramatic, while maintaining the vocal excitement. I find her Angelica preferable to that of Marlis Petersen in a recent DVD of that opera ( Fanfare 33: 6). Sure enough, Archibald has sung Angelica with Nikolaus Harnoncourt in Berlin, the only Haydn role listed in her already extensive bio.

Bienne (Biel) is a small Swiss city about 15 miles from Bern; its orchestra proves excellent. The instruments are modern (could those be period brass?) and many, but Thomas Rösner keeps everyone on their toes in sensitive accompaniments and in three vibrant overtures. This disc is not as winning as Thomas Quasthoff’s marvelous Deutsche Grammophon CD of Haydn arias, because he is so subtle and understands every moment of each aria. But Haydn aria discs are few and far between, and Archibald’s is certainly worth hearing, as is an Orfeo disc sung by Simona ?aturová ( Fanfare 33:2).
