Notes and Editorial Reviews

With this release, EMI has restored to domestic circulation the three Klemperer- Philharmonia Beethoven recordings that preceded his later cycle of the nine with that orchestra. (His earlier "Eroica" appeared a few months ago and was reviewed in 26:1 ). Both of these performances were recorded in 1955, No. 5 monaurally, No. 7 in stereo, and both, if not the most forward-pressing readings, offer greater thrust and animation than the conductor's later efforts. This Fifth Symphony is the finest of Klemperer's three studio efforts, having as it does a better orchestra and much superior engineering than that in his initial effort for Vox. There, incidentally, he gained the distinction of being the first conductor to include (as he Read more always did in the studio) the finale's exposition repeat. Indeed, along with Karajan's initial (1948) recording of the work and Erich Kleiber's celebrated account (1953), Klemperer's 1955 reading shines as one of the finest of the pre-stereo era. But if this Seventh is certainly a stronger account than the conductor's later one, it still seems wanting in thrust and animation, especially in its outer movements. And many may find Klemperer's opting for the violins to play pizzicato at the close of the second movement to be anomalous in the context of the music's character. Yet, for the Fifth Symphony alone, this reissue is well worth having, especially as the mono sound boasts uncommon clarity and presence for its vintage.
