MARÍN Tonos Humanos Félix Rienth (ten); Manuel Vilas (hp) LA MÁ DE GUIDO 2101 (54:50 Text and Translation)

I will confess to have been unfamiliar with José Marín (1619–1699), a Spanish composer who was apparently trained in Rome, where he became a priest. He returned to Madrid to sing in the Encarnación monastery chapel. He was hardly the model cleric, however, for he was arrested several times on charges of simple things such as assault Read more and murder. Despite these less than desirable social aspects, he seems to have been quite a popular composer of songs, the so-called tonos humanos , or secular songs. These were spread about, and indeed over 50 of them survive in a single manuscript in Cambridge.

This disc presents a tithe of them, 18 works from the later part of the 17th century, when they had migrated from being madrigal knock-offs to being for solo voice accompanied by a local instrument. In Spain, this was, as here, a cross-strung harp, but a guitar would also have been appropriate. The works are always tuneful, with a rather impressive sense of range for the voice. For example, in the song Ojos pues the voice has exhortations on words such as “el ver” that keep climbing up the scale, with increasing intensity. The language is poetic, usually about love, including the emotions of ardor, jealousy, despair. In this disc the Castilian Spanish is also almost musical, lending a cadence to the melody, though there is more than a hint of strophic composition. For instance, the song Ahora que estais dormido has a lovely harp accompaniment in which there are some interesting and unconventional harmonies, but then the voice comes in with short snippets of melody only a couple of notes long. For the sake of variation, he also speaks the second stanza, which makes the poetry more apparent, even if it is hardly how one might expect the strophic song to work.

Félix Rienth has a nicely resonant tenor voice, which is a good pairing with the harp. The playing of Manuel Vilas is flexible as far as the tempos go, and he brings out both the melodic lines and accompaniment with ease. My only quibble is that the text is in Spanish only, meaning that unless you read it, the contents of the poetry may be less than comprehensible. While I appreciate the multi-lingual brief notes, the text, which is the focal point of the songs, really ought to be accessible. On the other hand, I would highly recommend this disc as probably the only one that approaches this rare repertory. Rienth’s nice and very live performance brings these songs about the human predicament alive.
