Notes and Editorial Reviews

French National Radio Orchestra (Symphony); Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (L’Arlésienne Suites)/Sir Thomas Beecham. Originally issed on Angel EMI CDC 47794-2. Reissued on Warner Classics.

A holiday in the south of France, and what better guide than Thomas Beecham? Sir Thomas loved French ballets and the music of Bizet, and it shows in this recording. One finds no tour de force of ensemble here, and the intonation is at times a bit piquant, but the spirit is exactly right – buoyant, sunny and energetic, never driven or ponderous. The accounts are perfectly proportioned, and suffused throughout with a radiant lyricism. The dates of the recordings are not given, but the Symphony was done in 1960-61, the L’Arlésienne
Read more suites in 1956-57. The recording of the French orchestra is open, sweet, a little bright, that of the RPO much too dry, and almost mono in its narrow spread. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection. Read less

Excellent historical compilation  April 20, 2012 By CHARLES MULVILLE (108 MILE RANCH, BC) See All My Reviews "If my ears like the sound of the music, then I like it also!!! Thomas Beecham was a well respected conductor and apart from this compilation, recorded the compositions of Delius, so it is nice to see that he also had a great love for French music. I purchased this collection having heard the sound bites on your presentation and so far have played discs 5 & 6.I think that, considering the age of the original music(1947-1959),the engineers have re-mastered the music very well and so technically they compete well with today's standards. I think EMI are to be congratulated not only for the music itself, but also for the way they have presented the collection. This is very much a collector's item and the cost is well worth the enjoyment of the collection in whole. Well Done!!" Report Abuse
