Notes and Editorial Reviews

This disc contains both DDD and ADD recordings.
Record collectors know Noel Lee as the pianist whose recordings appeared on the emergent Nonesuch label in the 1960s, but he has also had a distinguished career as a composer. Born in 1924, Lee has impeccable credentials, from studies with Walter Piston at Harvard to the obligatory pilgrimage to Paris and Nadia Boulanger. Boulanger's teaching stressed the neo-classical ideal of clarity, and that is reflected in Lee's music, along with the serial organization that prevailed in the fifties when he found his voice.

Read more in which the protagonist lurks around the shadowy edges of an orchestral film noir, and it is tangible in the spare, metallic textures heard there and in "Convergences," a jagged, jangling duo for flute and harpsichord. The intensity reaches its peak in the "Dialogues" for violin and piano in which a winding, four-note motive is subjected to hundreds of permutations. This is not music which fades into the background gladly, but it will reward attentive listening. Read less
