Ensemble Vivant’s latest CD, Homage to Astor Piazzolla , is an extroverted collection capturing all the music’s Read more verve, passion, sensuality, nostalgia, and even brutality. The group’s pianist, Catherine Wilson, explains that she was “utterly captivated the first time I heard … Milonga for Three .” This fascination led Rick Wilkins, a frequent associate, to transcribe the piece for the trio. Subsequent exposure to Fuga y Misterio “had the same infectious effect,” and so the die was cast. Meeting Julien Labro, “who had been steeped in the Piazzolla tradition all his life,” allowed the group to study many more of the composer’s pieces, and the result of all this research and transcription can now be enjoyed on this very appealing recording. Here are well-known favorites alongside hidden gems, all bearing Piazzolla’s distinctive, tango-inspired lines and harmonies. Sometimes this irresistible “ground” is combined with classical techniques—I marvel at the intricate but seemingly effortless contrapuntal elaboration of Fuga y Misterio’s lengthy introductory subject—while elsewhere Piazzolla’s music is so naturally expressive that it could be mistaken for folk tunes that have always been in the air of his native Argentina. Nonetheless, the most famous tangos didn’t just evolve anonymously; Piazzolla deserves his fame as a master of the genre. If you’d like to hear a sample of Ensemble Vivant’s program and be visually entertained as well, they’ve posted a concert excerpt on YouTube in which they accompany a pair of tango dancers. Recommended.
