Notes and Editorial Reviews

These are absolutely wonderful performances. Munch had an ability to create excitement through the sheer intensity of the playing rather than through overt manipulations of tempo (though he could do that too), and this pays off handsomely in Brahms. The “lift” in the coda of the Second Symphony’s finale, the bite of the Fourth’s Scherzo, or the snarl of the trombones at the opening of the latter work’s concluding passacaglia—these are unforgettable moments, and there are many more. I should also mention the Second’s perfectly paced Adagio non troppo. There is a raw, visceral edge to these performances and an emotional generosity that you just don’t hear today. The sonics have a degree of hiss, which happily hasn’t been removed in this Read more latest remastering to the detriment of the treble frequencies. Otherwise the sonics, like the performance, are first-class.
