Notes and Editorial Reviews

On June 5, 2011, enigmatic Argentine pianist Martha Argerich will turn 70. Though it's hard to believe, Argerich has been recording for Deutsche Grammophon for 50 years and has made some of the great recordings on the label (or indeed, any label) that have been fully documented in "The Martha Argerich Collection" series of releases (Solo, Concerto and Chamber recordings). For this milestone birthday, DG releases this deluxe, hardcover release which includes three generously filled CDs (nearly 240 minutes) that portray the incredible virtuosity, style and range of this incomparable artist. In addition to these highlights (Ravel's Ondine from Gaspard de la nuit, movements from Ravel and Prokofiev concertos, Chopin Scherzi, chamber Read more music with Rostropovich, Kremer and Maisky, etc) DG has included two bonus tracks: a Mozart Adagio, from the last piano sonata, K. 576, played exquisitely by the 18-year-old Argerich on January 23, 1960; and the Rondo finale to Beethoven's op. 10 no. 3 Sonata, executed with inimitable flair and whimsical charm by the 19-year Argerich on September 8, 1960.

The 120-page full color booklet includes a complete discography (with original covers), a new essay by Martha Argerich's French biographer Olivier Bellamy and many rare photos from the Argerich family photo albums. This limited edition is the premiere celebration of Argerich's long and unmatched career.
