Notes & Reviews Back to Top
This must be one of the finest multichannel SACDs released to date. Telarc has managed sound that ideally complements the general excellence of the performances--and despite the fact that we may not exactly be desperate for another Sibelius Two, this version stands among the better ones, and the Tubin coupling is both unexpected and excellent. Previous multichannel efforts from this source, particularly the Lopez-Cobos Turina/Debussy coupling, suffered from what seems to be the Achilles' heel of surround sound: a dulling of impact and diffusion of attack when spread among the five speakers. Here though, with excellently judged front-to-back balances, the orchestra leaps out of the speakers and assumes a vivid three-dimensional presence in your listening room, with no loss of detail or blurring of the music's edge--a quality particularly critical in the sharply rhythmic outer movements of the Tubin. If you're new to surround sound or have been disappointed with previous efforts by various labels to conquer this challenging new sonic frontier, make this disc the foundation of your collection. It sets the standard by which others should be judged.
