Notes and Editorial Reviews

The recording of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in d minor where Bruno Walter played the piano and conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has been famous since it was first introduced on 78s. Up until now, the sound of the transfers has been very thin, especially in the strings. The piano sound was also harsh, completely without delicacy. It was very hard to appreciate the performance. In this wonderful new transfer, the piano sounds more real and the strings communicate more beautifully. Two sets of Japanese pressings were used for this transfer. As for the performance of the Brahms First Symphony also included on this CD, this particular performance is not often mentioned in the Walter/Vienna discography. This CD transfer should Read more change that for here great pressings were found to use in the transfer, ones with a wonderfully atmospheric acoustic. The rich ambience of the Musikverein Saal can now be fully appreciated for the first time. The sound of the winds and brass is magnificent. The introduction to the finale is amazing (where the horn, trombone and flute all play as if they are at the foot of a great mountain in the Alps). This transfer from Japanese Columbia Records just has to be one of the most beautiful recordings of this great symphony ever. Read less
