For early music choral/vocal fans this disc offers an attractive mixture of both well-known and unfamiliar works from the time of Elizabeth I. There’s Weelkes’ madrigal As Vesta was from Latmos Hill descending, Byrd’s anthem O Lord, make thy servant Elizabeth, and Wilbye’s classic Draw on, sweet night, along with a rare but shining gem by Philippe Rogier, Laboravi in gemitu meo, and other worthy selections that include a couple of works for solo lute (“Robin is to the greenwood gonn”; Dowland’s “The Right Honourable the Lady Rich, her galliard”) and another for lute and solo voice—Ferrabosco the younger’s song “So beauty on the waters stood”, very agreeably sung by soprano Alison Hill. The listening perspective is a bit on the close side,Read more but fortunately the voices individually sound well and make a fine ensemble blend, and Jacob Heringman’s lute contributions are very welcome on this primarily a cappella program. A very engaging 50 minutes in a well-sung, thoughtfully conceived recital.
