After visiting the legendary Fingal's Cave in Scotland, Mendelssohn jotted down what would become the opening theme of the overture, including it in a letter written home that same evening. The overture, an idyllic symphonic fantasy, was completed a year later in Rome. Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto is one of the most beautiful and popular works of all time. He began composing the concerto in 1838 and completed it in the autumn of 1844.
