Notes and Editorial Reviews

Nicolai Malko (1883-1961) was born in the Ukraine. His family was musical and his father encouraged his interest in orchestral music. He became a hornist in the local amateur orchestra. He also studied the piano and entered the Conservatory at St. Petersburg. He studied with Glazunov, Rimsky-Korsakov, Liadov and Tcherepnin. He also studied conducting in Munich with Felix Mottl. After the revolution, he became one of the leading figures in the new Soviet Union. He gave the premiere of Shostakovich's First Symphony in 1926. In 1930, Emil Holm was trying to upgrade the quality of the Danish Radio Orchestra of which he was manager. The main conductor of the time was Launy Grondahl, but Holm wanted someone with a "better name." He had heard Read more Malko conduct in Vienna and wanted him to come to Denmark. At the time it was very difficult to leave Russia. Malko was allowed to make one guest appearance which was very well received. Consequently arrangements were made for him to become the chief conductor. As you will hear from these recordings, the collaboration was a most fruitful one. Most of the performances contained in this set were recorded between 1947 and 1950. Many of them are here made available for the first time since their original 78 release. Besides the recordings made in Denmark, this set also contains a small number of performances Malko made with the Philharmonia Orchestra. These show how he interpreted the music of his teachers, Liadov, Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov. Malko's association with the Danish Radio Orchestra continued right up until his death in 1961. In fact, he had to cancel his last concert because of illness. Read less
