Notes and Editorial Reviews

The ideal concert program is varied, entertaining and not tiring for the audience, and features the most popular works of the best known composers. This formula guarantees success for any concert promoter, and indeed one of Europe's largest summer festivals, that of Schleswig-Holstein, has been adapting it with spectacular results for years. What could therefore justify changing it and opting for its complete opposite? Well, the idyllic northern German town of Husum tried just that in 1987 with a week of piano recitals in which the ideal of variation and entertainment was maintained, but dispensing with the firm favorites that usually guarantee box office income. The Festival was the brainchild of pianist Peter Froundjian whose aim was to Read more show audiences that works by lesser-known composers, or lesser-known works by familiar composers could happily make for a successful concert. The gamble paid off: with the 13th edition of the festival in 1999, the "Rarities" concept had spawned similar events throughout Europe. Froundjian has also proved that these recitals in Husam Castle's great hall are not merely elite affairs for the initiated, but have an appeal both for local residents, the broader concert-going public and for overseas guests who arrive regularly from as far afield as the United States.
