Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Italian Princess Belgioioso gave benefit concerts in aid of various causes, including one for the Italian Liberation movement. For this event she conceived the idea of inviting six leading piano virtuosi to compose a variation work together, settling for none other than Liszt to co-ordinate the project. A theme appropriate to the cause was chosen, "Suoni la tromba" from Bellini's opera I Puritani, and the final result Hexameron - Morceau de Concert was completed in 1837 - too late unfortunately for the Belgioioso concert. Six of the eleven sections were composed by Liszt, and the rest by the other composers listed. Despite accounts to the contrary, the six composer-pianists never sat down to perform the work together. Here we have an Read more interesting CD which gives us the complete Hexameron, as well as examples of other compositions by the six composers represented in the larger, collective composition. All this is presented brilliantly, by the young, rising Russian pianist Oleg Marshev. Mr. Marshev is truly the star of the Danacord piano catalog with many terrific discs already available and with many more forthcoming. Read less
