Notes and Editorial Reviews

In 1937, Jurgen Balzer, a scholar, began in collaboration with HMV, to compile an anthology of gramophone records which was to illustrate the history of music in Denmark. The series naturally comprised primarily Danish music, but foreign composers who were of importance to the development of Danish music were also represented. The main emphasis of the series, which was unfortunately never completed - it was discontinued about 1950 - was on renaissance and baroque music. Buxtehude, whose works had hardly been recorded at all before Balzer began to do so, is thus represented by 16 out of the series' total of 53 selections. 9 of the selections contained music from the 20th century, music which at the time of recording was only a few years old Read more and Tarps' Concerto, the two Bentzon works and Jersild's Trois Pieces are all from this series. It should be remembered that during the War, HMV's Danish records were pressed in Germany where sadly, many of the matrices were destroyed during enemy action. These were re-recorded after the War. To this category belongs Bentzon's Toccata. Egil Harder's recording of Bach and Folmer Jensen's of Mozart and Brahms are from live broadcasts. The rest of the material was supplied by the families of the pianists involved in the recordings. The condition of the recordings used for these CDs is very good. Read less
