Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ebbe Hamerik was a prominent figure in Danish music from his conducting debut in 1919 to his sudden death in 1951. He was taught theory and composition by his father, Asger Hamerik, whose impeccable, melodious romantic music has found renewed favor in the last few years thanks to a number of CD releases. His lessons were supplemented by a brief, but intense period studying conducting with the Belgian-American composer and conductor Frederick van der Stucken, who spent the final years of the First World War in Copenhagen. As a conductor, Hamerik achieved early acclaim at home and abroad. His breakthrough as a composer came with his opera Stepan, which had its first performance in 1924. His other passion was yachting and on his schooner, the Read more Stout, he undertook intrepid voyages across the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean. He was alone on board when the vessel capsized on its way from Norway on August 13, 1951 and was washed ashore near Halmstad, Sweden. His body was never found. During his highly eventful life Hamerik managed to compose a limited number of works in an idiom very much his own. The music for his opera The Travelling Companion reflects the contrast between the innocence and piety of the leading character and the representatives of the evil he has to overcome on his journey to find and redeem the woman he has met in a dream. This 1974 radio recording of the opera presents about two thirds of the music. Read less
