Notes and Editorial Reviews

MOZART Piano Sonatas: No. 12 in F; No. 5 in G; No. 8 in a. Fantasia in d Dubravka Tom?i? (pn) IPO 1019 (76:10)

It’s always interesting to see what a virtuoso pianist will do with Mozart, whose music seems (for professionals) to challenge the heart rather than the fingers. The dangers are obvious to listeners: Pianists will over-interpret, putting in dynamic changes or tempo changes, speeding up or pausing dramatically, where the music asks for simplicity. Mozart’s most wonderful moments are frequently his Read more barest statements. It is because he recognizes that that I’ve admired for decades Cristoph Eschenbach’s Mozart as well as the even earlier playing of Schnabel. Dubravka Tom?i?’s Mozart isn’t quite that straightforward, and yet it is usually marvelous, as in the Bach-like opening of the Fantasia, K 283. She is eloquent even when she is being mysterious; when the main theme comes in, Tom?i?’s playing sounds almost bleak. On any fast movement, she can’t be beat. Still, though I heartily recommend this disc, and have already played it for friends, I wish the Adagio in the Sonata in F were more starkly played. Others will marvel at the pianist’s sensitivity as well as agility.
