CHOPIN Scherzos: Nos. 1–4. Piano Sonata No. 2. Berceuse Dubravka Tom?i? (pn) IPO 1018 (74:36)

Almost everything I have read about the Slovenian pianist Dubravka Tom?i? tells us that Artur Rubinstein called her “a perfect and marvelous pianist” and at the same time wonders why she isn’t more well known. At some point, the pianist has probably accepted being merely “legendary,” or having “cult status,” as Gramophone has put it. She travels widely, Read more including in the United States. The only problem as I see it is that her many recordings are mostly not available. Recorded in 2004, this bold new Chopin collection is therefore especially welcome. Tom?i? can be grand as well as impulsive. She has a big sound, and also the tact to modulate and control it. The scherzos are virtuoso works in that the notes are hard to play, but also because of their shifting moods, which need to be acknowledged without letting the whole fall apart. Tom?i? produces the necessary drama; her technique is ample and her sound varied. She also has the rhythmic sense to make the pieces coherent as well as exciting. She does so mostly at tempos that are slower than Pollini’s, for instance, without losing the thread. Her “Funeral March” sonata is distinguished by the same flexibility. In the first movement, she lets the tension fall away in the slower passages more than I thought I’d like. But then she manages to rebuild. Her Berceuse reminds me of the playing of her mentor Rubinstein. Tom?i? is someone who is in control of every effect, and whose musicality makes every gesture work.
