This gem from 1983 happily is reissued on Newton Classics, the Holland-based label that’s giving classical music recording fans something “new” to cheer about. The label is returning to the catalog many classic titles, “from the vaults of major record labels…most of which have not been on the market for a substantial period of time.” This rich and dynamic program from Westminster Cathedral was for many listeners their first exposure to Renaissance/early Baroque choral works, including Allegri’s famed Miserere. the choir is so well-managed, and the overall tone quality of the ensemble is such that the upper voices remain clear and present. It’s a beautiful sound, particularly in the Palestrina, Lotti, and Victoria works. And the recording itself, captured in the tricky acoustics of Westminster, is first-rate. Newly written liner notes by Andrew Stewart complete a very attractive package.
