Notes and Editorial Reviews

Sparkle and verve mark these elegant performances of Matteis' courtly works.

The Arcadian Academy may have changed personnel since their previous, award-winning recording of Matteis (9/92) and that of Uccellini (7/94)—violinist Lisa Weiss replaces Katherine Kyme--but their sparkle and verve are undimmed. As with the earlier Matteis disc, they mix early solo violin works from his first and second collections of violin `ayres' (both published in London in 1676) with the later ones from his third and fourth (both 1685), for which he published second violin parts (1687) which effectively transform them into trios.

Matteis's style might best be described as courtly: amusing and relatively undemanding on the
Read more listener. 'Chromatic' is too strong a term for the occasional and brief purple patches encountered in such movements as the "Maliconico" of the Suite in C minor and, even in the minor-mode works, he rarely plumbs the depth of feeling encountered in the exquisite sequences and suspensions of Corelli's sonatas. While interspersing fanfares (the "Preludio" of the F major Sonata) and dances in the suites (Alemandas, Correntes, Sarabandas and Gavottas), Matteis relies heavily on variations (clivisione) to carry the day. The passages of double-stopping in the "Pavana Armoniosa" of the B flat major Sonata come as a delightful treat and are beautifully executed here by Lisa Weiss to a plucked accompaniment.

The plethora of arias (or ayres) within the suites are more eclectically styled----now French, now Italian, now Scottish ("Bizzarrie all'Umor Scozzese"), now sultry and flirtatious ("Passaggio rotto" of the A minor Suite, played by Elizabeth Blumenstock), now mischievous (the syncopated "Aria burlesca con molte bizzarie" from the same suite). Blumenstock plays the aristocratic poseur in the graceful theme of the "Movimento incognito" with just the right touch of wit. David Bowles contributes firm bass lines, nicely coming to the fore in passages of imitation and running bass. David Taylor's archlute, theorbo and guitar accompaniments add richness to the ensemble texture, as do Nicholas McGegan's varied and always elegant harpsichord and organ realizations. More bouquets for the Arcadian Academy are in order!
