Notes and Editorial Reviews

The 1970 performance sounds as good as new on CD, though like that of the Seventh, it is a close-focus recording and if you don't turn the volume down you will have the neighbours complaining... That the playing is supreme scarcely needs saying... Solti is best in the finale, where the two hammer-blow climaxes come as the inevitable catharsis of the preceding tumult, and he imparts a really diabolical (i.e. Mephistophelean) savagery to the start of the Scherzo... Yvonne Minton's exceptional performance of the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen...is one of the best recordings Minton has made, an interpretation of outstanding sensitivity, with the texts most meaningfully projected. Her collaboration with Solti is mutually full of insights. It is Read more Mahlersinging in the Ludwig and Baker class.
