Notes and Editorial Reviews

This 2-CD set is a portrait of probably the greatest tenor of this or any other age: Plácido Domingo. Born in Spain in 1941, Domingo spent his early life in Mexico where his parents, both singers, ran a company that presented zarzuelas (Spanish light operas) and other musical shows.

Domingo's career as a tenor has spanned the entire world in a wide range of operas in which he has sung over 120 roles, and in 1990 he made history when, with José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti, he first appeared in Rome as one of the The Three Tenors, whose subsequent concerts and recordings broke all records for television viewing and record sales. He has subsequently shown great talent as a conductor and has very recently begun

CD 1 begins with three lyrical arias by Mozart, followed by Domingo singing as a baritone in the famous duet ‘La cì darem la mano’ from Mozart’s Don Giovanni with the mezzo-soprano Susan Graham. Then comes a Baroque aria from Handel’s Giulio Cesare and three favourite arias from French opera including ‘Ô paradis’ from Meyerbeer’s L’africaine and ‘Salut! demeure’ from Gounod’s Faust. Next, two items by Tchaikovsky sung in Russian– the song ’None but the lonely heart’ and Lensky’s Aria from Eugene Onegin – lead on to a group of Italian operatic arias by Puccini, Boito and Mascagni and the disc ends with Domingo in Wagner Heldentenor mode with part of the Love Duet from Tristan und Isolde and the energetic Forging Song from Siegfried.

CD 2 opens with a group of favourite arias by Verdi, starting with the stirring ‘Celeste Aida’ and finishing with the Death Scene from Otello, one of Domingo’s greatest stage triumphs. Then this multitalented singer takes us to Vienna for a feast of wonderful music from some of the glorious operettas that are part of the heritage of this great city, including ‘Ach, wie so herrlich zu schau’n’ from Ein Nacht in Venedig by Johann Strauss II and ‘Dein ist mein ganzes Herz’ from Das Land des Lächelns by Franz Lehár. Then Domingo returns to his roots for a collection of arias from Spanish zarzuelas. Although the zarzuela is thought of as a form of light opera, it can be quite dramatic and Domingo revels in bringing vitality and colour to this programme of widely varied items from some of the most popular examples of the genre by its leading composers, including Jacinto Guerrero, Francisco Alonso and Pablo Sorozábal. These are followed by two songs by Joaquín Rodrigo, in which Domingo is accompanied by the distinguished guitarist Manuel Barrueco. The disc ends with three contrasting romantic popular songs which Domingo presents in colourful Latin arrangements. Firstly we hear ‘En Aranjuez con tu amor’ based on the slow movement from the famous Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo, then the well-known tango ‘Jealousy’ and finally the traditional Spanish ballad ‘La Golondrina’
