Notes and Editorial Reviews

In an age of meteoric but at the same time short lived careers, a long and well established artist occupies a special place. One of the best examples of a long and full career is that of Giuseppe Taddei. He has been active for more than sixty years and throughout this period has maintained a leading position among the best singers of his time. Even in his late performances one was able to admire the characteristic and still intact quality of his voice - a baritone voice of a very particular softness and roundness, with a timbre and refinement that were quite unique in the world of opera singers. His excellent vocal culture is one of the singer's greatest gifts, but there are other characteristic virtues as well: strong intelligence, Read more infallible musicality and a secure sense for vocal style and musical expressiveness. Most of all, however, he was a real animale di palcoscenio (stage animal), as the Italians say, which, with his southern temperament would probably have been enough to make of Taddei a first rate stage artist, even if he had not had a singing voice. He was a master of characterization who always found the right shades in both tragic and comic roles and never sank into exaggeration. Aspiring singers are often warned of singing too much and going beyond their natural vocal limits in order to protect their voices. Taddei is one of the exceptions which prove the rule. The artist never saved himself. One appearance followed the other and his repertoire was never restricted. He is considered by many connoisseurs the most important baritone of his time. Sadly, his solo recordings are surprisingly rare. This solo CD does do great justice to the great achievements of this excellent artist. Read less
