Notes and Editorial Reviews

Iris Szeghy was born in Presov (East Slovakia) and studied at the music college of Bratislava. She taught music theory there and in 1994 was a visiting composer at the University of California in San Diego. In 1995, she was composer in residence at the Hamburg Opera. Since 1990, she has made her living as a freelance composer. "Faint luminous sound effects, most delicately chased individual tones and breaks full of tension characterize some of the inner wealth of Iris Szeghy's music. Not rarely, past epochs of musical history are evoked in her works. Thus modal melodic phrases are used which are amalgamated with avant-garde structures in a very original, almost ascetic manner. Works for traditional genres such as the string quartet, Read more concerto, accompanied solo lied and a cappella chorus are found together with programmatic solo, ensemble and orchestral compositions preferring a clear and comprehensible concept of development. All of them show a charmingly independent expressiveness, often spirituality, revealing sensitive emotional traits and occasionally deriving intensification from reducing the musical means". The composer writes: "For me, music is a longing for monologue and dialogue at the same time, for making myself understood, boosting my confidence and devoting myself to others. Music is a question which is an answer in itself, an answer which is a question. It is a bridge". Read less
