Rise Stevens was born in New York City and studied at Juilliard and in Vienna. In 1938, she made her debut at the Met in "Mignon" with Richard Crooks and Ezio Pinza. For over two decades, until 1961, she was considered the Met's leading mezzo and during her first two years, she even attempted excursions into the Wagnerian field (Erda and Fricka). In 1958, she performed when President Eisenhower laid the cornerstone for The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
